"When I'm a parent...."

A few days ago...

Eli: "When I grow up and my kids flood the bathroom and break the kitchen ceiling..."

Us: "Yeah..." (Expecting him to say, "I'll never punish them & be horrible parents like you!")

Eli: "Dad, when I grow up, if my kids do that, can you teach me how to fix it?"

We were so choked up. He was basically saying, "When I grow up, I want to be just like you, Dad." When is there ever a prouder parental moment? :)

You just can't win sometimes

During a particularly difficult few days, this is what Eli & Mia's family prayers sounded like:

Eli: "Dear Heavenly Father, Please help Mommy to fix her voice.* In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen."

Mia: "... Please! help! Mommy! to! Be! Happy! ...." (repeating the words Chris was helping her with, she was standing behind me doing karate chops on my back. Yeah, that will help me to be happy.)

* "Fix Your Voice" is something we say to the kids to get them to stop whining, or to talk more nicely to each other. Oops!

Bowling is so much more fun with all my cousins!

After we went to the Bean Museum, we had a small picnic on BYU campus, then went bowling, at an alley where my uncle Jeremy is part owner. It is the funnest place to go and everyone had a blast.

Here are all my cousins that were at the reunion. From left to right: Mia, Levi, Melia, Joseph, Cardon and Eli, with Keith above. (Eli is doing his socks "So You Think You Can Dance" style) :)

Our uncle Paul decided to be the helper of all the beginning bowlers. What a sweet thing to do so that the other moms & dads could have fun & bowl.

Our grandma and grandpa are so much fun. They created a game for us to search for coins in a pile of sawdust. How inventive & fun. We were amused for a really long time (which is a miracle given the length of our attention spans). Wish we could go to grandma & grandpa's to get wet and get dirty more often because our mom sure never lets us!

Cute little picture of Mia's behind. :)

The Cardon Family Reunion

At Grandma & Grandpa's house we started out with a bunch of games & activities. These are some chalk drawings on the sidewalk that my mom, my cousin, Levi & I (Eli) drew as we started the day. A castle & our family tree.

We've been in Utah for a few weeks!

The next few posts will be pictures from our trip. Here is a very excited little boy about to board the airplane in D.C. We flew from D.C. to Denver, to Salt Lake. New sunglasses, new spiderman watch, new spiderman backpack that ROLLS. New toys to keep him busy on the plane... he was READY!!

  2. To have new stuff. Presents, of course.
  3. Specifically, magnets from Grandma.
  4. To be older like Alexa.

More Pictures Do The Talking For Us

This is us bowling for the first time at Lucky Strike in Chinatown, Washington, D.C.

This is how Mom found the couch & floor the other day after Mia dumped a whole box of Cheerios and a box of Raisin Bran all over. (The photo doesn't even do it justice.)

The next two are Mia and Eli on the bike obstacle course at our ward's Pioneer Day party.

What Do You Do In The Summertime?

Here's what Eli and Mia have been up to. (Unfortunately, the photo-journaling has not been up to par, but we'll tell you about it instead.)

  • We went to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing and saw how money was printed. We thought it was pretty cool to go to Washington, D.C. for the afternoon.
  • We are tall enough to bounce around the water by ourselves in the shallow end of Hayfield Pool. We've seen lots of preschool friends there & we love it until we meltdown with fatigue while Mom's swimsuit strap simultaneously breaks and she drags us out of there. Never a dull moment.
  • Eli has been doing the Summer Bridge workbook to get ready for Kindergarten next year. He LOVES it & asks to do his "homework" every day.
  • Eli has proudly become the best expert room cleaner & bed maker. He brags about it to friends. "I'm really great at cleaning my room and making my bed."
  • Dad took us to the tennis court (For Father's Day, Eli gave Dad a can of tennis balls & a small racket Eli can use so they can play together). We were in heaven. Eli learned forehand and Mia was content to just drag a big racket all over the court.
  • We went to a library class and listened to books about parades, made our own tambourines and marched on the grass with all the other kids.
  • Our family played mini-golf at Burke Lake Park. Eli was actually a great little golfer and scored equal to or just over par 2 or 3 times! Mia again was content to just drag the golf club all over the golf course. :) She'll work on her sports achievements as she gets a little older.

It sure made my mom & I dizzy!

A Fun Weekend For Eli

Mother's Day Luncheon at my preschool! I helped make the food, the flowers, a placemat for mom, an invitation for her, and planted some zinnia seeds that sprouted! (Too bad no one can get me to smile in any pictures anymore.)

The Father's & Son's Campout! I was counting down to it all week!

Some Opinions from Mia

Every once in a while my mom takes me to the gym. They have a day care there that I don't care much for. But I've got a sure-fire way to make my visits short. Just poop! Mom NEVER brings diapers with us. So when I'm done being in the day care, all I have to do is poop, tell the ladies I have a poopy diaper, they go get my mom, and Voila! My mom shows up and we go home.

Earlier today...

Mom: Mia, are the ladies at the gym nice or not nice?
Me: Not nice.
Mom: Is Sister Brisson nice or not nice?
Me: Nice.
Mom: Is Daddy nice or not nice?
Me: Nice.
Mom: Are your nursery teachers nice or not nice?
Me: Nice.
Mom: Is mommy nice or not nice?
Me: Not nice.
Mom: What??????????

A 4 Year Old Trying To Understand a Mass Shooting

From Eli: (mom's comments in green)

I heard the radio say that 33 people have been killed and I asked my mom about it. What happened is a mean, mean, mean robber (robber=enemy of the police/anyone who does something mean and bad) had a gun and shot a bunch of people. Then he shot HIMSELF!!!!! (That's what really got to him. I think he was just glad the bad guy wasn't around anymore.)

The people who died are ok. They are in heaven. If I die, I will be ok. I will go to heaven.

But I won't die. Jesus and the police will protect me. There are no bad guys in my neighborhood. They are far away. I'm safe in my home and at my school. (Our kids HAVE to believe that. Life just can't go on if they don't.)

When my mom asked me about it again (trying to make sure that he really did feel safe & not scared), I said I didn't want to talk about it anymore because "I might get frightened." (Ok. I got the hint.)

Mom took a while to post this because there was a big learning curve! Here is 2 minutes and 20 seconds of my great singing (the best is at the end)!

From Eli

My life is rich with lots of healthy pretending. At the kid party* that I go to each week, Nick is the bad guy and I rescue Alexa. Sometimes I'm the bad guy and Nick rescues Alexa. Last week we played house. I was the dog for a while, then I was the baby. When I play with Mia, she's the mom & I'm the baby. Sometimes I just miss those baby days of being able to scream as much as I want and people running around catering to my needs.

Tonight I went to the kid party and we played, "bake." Last week at the kid party we baked St. Patrick's Day cookies. Here is a picture of me & my friends making cookies & drinking water as we watched a movie.

*The kid party is my parents' babysitting co-op. We switch off between 5 families, so my parents get 4 dates on Saturdays and just one crazy night with 8 kids. We love it!

From Mia

Here's what my parents have been hearing all day every day for the past week or so:

Me: "I will do it!"
30 seconds later...
Me: "Help!"

I'm trying so hard to learn to do all the things my big brother can do.

Tomorrow I will have to go see the pediatrician. Mom's pretty sure I have an ear infection. I've been such an unhappy camper.

I told my mom today, pointing at my little doll, "Baby's ears hurt." :(

From Eli

Yesterday in preschool I learned how to say, "Bonjour," "merci," and "au revoir!" Wouldn't Jo-Jo be proud?

My dad put it into my head that I have a baby brother. We put my clothes in a bin when they are too small for me & my dad said they are for my baby brother. Every day I talk about my baby brother up in heaven (NO, NO, NO, MOM IS NOT PREGNANT!). But I lay things aside for my brother all the time now. Just to make sure he has everything he needs. I built a tower of chairs and what-not to reach the bin where his clothes are just to put a pair of underwear in there for him. He'll need that, right?!

Today I have an imaginary pet. His name is Frodo. He is a bat. He got dressed with me, ate with me and watched TV with me. When I had to hold things in my hand, I had to be careful not to crush Frodo. Sometimes, I just had to carry things with my one free hand. Frodo needs a lot of attention.

Here is a picture of Frodo I drew for you:

From Mia

The Princess has entered the building.

I got to go to a PRINCESS BIRTHDAY PARTY! I got to wear my beautiful princess dress Mom bought me for the occasion. My favorite part of it BY FAR was the CROWN. We danced and played and jumped in the castle moon bounce. We glued jewels onto other little crowns and played pin the kiss on the Sleeping Beauty. At the end we each got a cupcake with our very own candle to blow out! It just doesn't get much better than this!

Here's another photo with me & my friend, Cammy, the birthday girl.

From Eli

I don't know if you've heard, but I'm 4 and a half. They had a 4 and a half year birthday party for me at school and this was quite an awakening for me. Four and a half is MORE than just 4!! Since I'm 4 and a half, I can jump higher, reach taller and I'm MUCH stronger. Because I'm 4 and a half. My parents say we have to eat as many bites at dinner as we are old. When they said I had to eat 4 bites, I corrected them. FOUR AND A HALF bites.

I told my gymnastics teacher I was 4 and a half. I told the grocery clerk I was 4 and a half. I told my babysitter I was 4 and a half. Did I tell you I was 4 and a half? I'm 4 and a half.

After my party at preschool, my only complaint to my mom was, "Mom, they didn't give me any presents!" Everyone knows you should get presents when you're 4 and a half.

From Eli

I am just dazzled by all things Super Hero. I have Superman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk pajamas, the Incredibles, Spiderman, Star Wars and Buzz Lightyear action figures. My spiderman doll has suction cups on his hands and he sticks to the window. Cool!!! Daily I ask mom to pin a dishtowel around my shoulders as a cape. On some of the shows I watch on TV they say, "We're here to save the day." That has been one of my favorite phrases.

But my favorite super hero of all is MY DAD!! Our car was stuck in the snow last week and I couldn't contain myself when my dad got in front of the car and PUSHED IT OUT!! He is SO STRONG!!

So the other day, my dad and I had this conversation:

(Looking through a pictorial book of Utah.)
Dad: Eli, Daddy grew up around all these mountains. Look at this one. I've been to the very top of it!

Eli: WOW!!!!!!!! Did you use SUCTION CUPS????

Dad: No, I used my feet.

From Mia

I am becoming a Real Big Girl. I love necklaces, bracelets and nail polish. I imitate everything my mom does. Down to the way mom holds her fingers during family prayer. I do exercise videos with mom and it won't be long until I am 3 and can go to my own dance classes. Won't mom and Jo-Jo be proud!

Well, I got in the way of a book flying through the air (thanks to Eli) and got this black eye.

Tattling has been a good motivation for me to learn to talk, lately. I said this clear as day, "Eli, close your eyes!!" (during the prayer).

From Eli

I've been receiving a lot of indoctrination by Noggin and Playhouse Disney. Today was definitely a TV day. Having waffles for breakfast was really cool. But then Mom took us for a walk in the double stroller. BOORRRRRRRING. I let Mom know when I was done & she wouldn't even turn around.

At lunch:

Me: "No I won't try that soup. It's gross!"
Mom: "No more TV until you eat your soup."
Me: "This soup is really good! I love this soup."

Mom took a nap today. Good thing there's a child proof lock on the door or I would probably answer the door every time I hear a knock and get myself kidnapped by some psycho. I like to answer the phone now, too.

The day ended rather badly. I threw a book at Mia and I accidentally hit her in the eye. There was blood and everything. Dad took away all my privileges. I had to go straight to bed for the rest of the night. I don't think I'll ever do that again.

A final quote for the day, "Mom! Dad! I can see our infection in the window!" Oops. I mean reflection.
